Liberia

Ghana Air

My (Brian’s) first trip overseas was to Monrovia, Liberia.  We flew on Ghana Air.  It was my first and only experience flying on an African airline.  I waited over a week for my luggage to eventually be found.  Fortunately I brought one change of clothes in my carry-on.  Every night I hand-washed clothes to wear the next day.

We stayed at the Lutheran guest house.  The rooms were very spartan, but clean and comfortable with electricity and air-conditioning in early morning and late evening.  The air conditioning helped us to get a good night’s sleep.  One night we had a severe African-style thunderstorm.  Our window had louvered-class, and Kurt, my teammate, had to rearrange the room in the middle of the night to avoid being soaked.

Liberia had just ended a civil war which destroyed the country’s infrastructure.  Most buildings had a “bombed-out” appearance.  I thought this may have been limited to the big city of Monrovia, but one of our hosts said Monrovia was actually in better shape than the rest of the country.  Many American missions were present in Liberia helping them to rebuild.

Kurt was the ideal team leader.  I learned much from him.  He was able to illustrate the answer to almost any question by drawing a cross and a timeline.

It was the first time I had ever devoted an entire two weeks to teaching and studying the Word without distraction.  The experience was incredibly life changing.

The Bible school was held in an large apartment building.  We had a portable public address system which helped tremendously.  There were no windows, and the street noise was continuous – everything from chickens and church choirs to welding shops and military parades.  At night, we lit the classroom by car battery and fluorescent lights.  When the car batteries failed, we used candles.  It was remarkable to take the taxi back to the guest house through an entire city lit by candle light.

Liberia is an English speaking country founded by the United States in the late 1800’s.  The people we met there had a strong appreciation for America and were grateful for the foreign aid and mission society outreaches which came from the States.  The Liberian Bible students were very receptive to our teachings.  Some of our students came from as far away as Nigeria.  We were asked many questions, and God was faithful to provide the answers to us and the students.  It was a wonderful first-time teaching experience.

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received [it] not [as] the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

1Thessalonians
2:13
